Harwich Facilities Committee Backs Gym Basketball Hoop Replacement
HARWICH — January 23, 2026 — Harwich Facilities Committee votes to replace aging gym basketball hoops. The committee unanimously supported replacing the original hoop infrastructure at the community center, citing safety concerns, with funding drawn from an unspent prior town meeting article. The board also heard four draft scenarios for updating room rental fees — ranging from a flat $10 cleanup surcharge to a tiered group-size fee — with the director reminding members that only the Select Board can set final rates. Sheila House made her debut as the Council on Aging liaison, outlining three priorities from the council's completed needs assessment: broader outreach communications, expanded social media presence, and a more accessible resource guide. The committee canceled its February 13 meeting and will next convene March 13 at 3:30 p.m., following a January 27 joint space-use session with the Council on Aging and Recreation Department.
