Other Committee · Meeting of August 27, 2026
Harwich Charter Commission approved the final draft of its proposed town charter and voted to send it to the state for review. The commission, meeting for the 56th time since June 2025, unanimously adopted "Draft Seven" of the charter after a final round of line edits and unanimously approved its accompanying report for submission to the Massachusetts Attorney General and the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities. The commission's chair said the two provisions most likely to draw public pushback are a proposed town manager position and a revised fall town meeting process, calling it "the biggest two things." A public hearing on the charter is set for October 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Griffin Room of Harwich Town Hall, with the state filing deadline set for September 21.
The commission, which began with 11 members and now has nine, plans to meet again September 17 and October 15 before the charter heads toward a spring ballot vote.
