HARWICH — The Harwich Finance Committee pressed state Rep. Hadley Luddy on local aid gaps and a stalled rural schools bill. Luddy, joined by aide Grayson Rountree, said Massachusetts' local aid formula creates disparities of $5 to $100 per student between towns and that the Rural Schools Bill, proposed at $60 million, has historically been funded at just $12 million to $20 million.
She cited recent state grants to Harwich, including $340,000 for the West Harwich Baptist Church rehabilitation and $300,000 for the town's shellfish lab. Members also discussed the roughly 75-25 Monomoy Regional School District cost split with Chatham, warning Harwich is nearing its tax levy limit. "Harwich is getting close to reaching our levy limit, and Chatham is sitting back there fat, dumb and happy," one member said.
The committee approved its Aug. 15 and Aug. 27 minutes by roll call and will begin meeting weekly starting Oct. 28.
