Other Committee · Meeting of October 15, 2026

Harwich's Charter Commission agreed to clarify charter language after the Attorney General's office flagged ambiguities in three chapters. Members decided to add the word "town" to Chapter 2 to exclude school district employees, rename the proposed Compliance Commission a "board" to avoid confusion with the elected Charter Commission, and add language stating its hearing decisions "shall be advisory in nature." The Attorney General's letter stated the draft "does not conflict with the Constitution or laws of the Commonwealth." A member disclosed a relationship to the library trustees chair and recused from related discussion, while the Harwich Employees Association's proposed language changes were tabled pending legal advice. Members also defended an August vote taken with five of seven members present, calling criticism of its validity "skewed logic." A public hearing, strictly limited to listening to testimony, is set for next week.
