The Select Board and the elected Charter Commission met jointly May 21 for a two-and-a-half-hour working session on proposed revisions to the town charter, which the commission intends to place on the May 2027 town ballot after 45 meetings and roughly 200 hours of work. Select Board Chair Don Howell proposed a compromise on the commission's fall town meeting proposal, codifying that the board must place a discussion of a potential fall meeting on its agenda each October or November, rather than mandating a second annual town meeting, citing costs estimated at $20,000 to $40,000 per meeting, free-cash certification uncertainty, and lower seasonal-resident turnout. The commission's proposal for an elected charter-compliance body drew the sharpest opposition: member Jeff Handler said flatly, "I do not support this at all one bit," and noted only two of Massachusetts's roughly 350 communities, Bourne and Provincetown, have such a body.
